Blues Saraceno - Save my Soul
0 replies

I was going to save this for later but I need a mental palate cleanser from everything that has happened today (and, quite frankly, I was getting annoyed that "Give It Up" was stuck in my head).

Back when The History Channel was still "The History Channel" and not "Ancient Aliens making Moonshine while Picking through other people's garages looking for deals," it had actual shows that tried to educate you on things.

Here's the intro song for one of those series (The Men who Built America) which has always stuck in my head. It's a blues-y, old-radio country-styled song called "Save my Soul."

Kingsman: Secret Service OST - Give It Up
0 replies

I like to jokingly call "Kingsman: The Secret Service" the best James Bond movie within the past 10 years. It certainly captures the vibe of the early James Bond films before they tried their hand at being more Jason Bourne than James Bond.

Anyway, here's an artful use of an older song (KC and the Sunshine Band) in the movie during the climactic finale.

Pinout OST - Zero Dark Hundred

I don't even have the game but this track (and the entire OST) is really wonderful. It evokes the early 1980s better than a lot of authentic 1980s synthwave / New Age did. You could literally insert this music into the years 1978 - 1984 and no one would bat an eyelash. That's how seamless it is to the source material.

It just goes to show you that homages work so much better than parodies. When you respect the material, rather than mock the material, the results are always better.

I completely forgot all about the Oscars the other day. Oops.

Back in the old days, that was Must-See TV for me. Just goes to show that you really do change as you get older.

Jack Hylton - Blue Skies are Around the Corner

I enjoy these types of happy, optimistic songs. Unlike homages, this is really-for-real old-time song. It was released in 1938 (not the best of timing considering what Europe would eventually go through from 1939 through 1945...). However, I discovered the song when it was used in the movie "The Last Days on Mars" (2013) which was sort of a NASApunk-(yeah, that's a thing)-meets-zombies movie.

The Dark Knight - Main Theme
1 replies

Even before the untimely death of Heath Ledger, people knew that the follow-up to "Batman Begins" was going to be huge. It promised the return of Batman's nemesis, The Joker.

Heath Ledger pulled off something no one had done since Jack Nicholson: Be The Joker. And not only be The Joker but put his own stamp onto the character.

The first part of this song is just so driven. You've got the background that's very hectic and fast-paced and the foreground music that's very slow moving to create a really memorable track for a very memorable movie.

I sometimes wonder what life would be like if Heath Ledger had lived to see his Dark Knight fame. Would he have been typecast as William Shatner was with Captain Kirk? Would he have been a "flash-in-the-pan" like Mark Hamill with Luke Skywalker, never again finding the same level of fame?

Collateral - Ready, Steady, Go (Korean Version)

Before there was John Wick, there was Vincent in the movie "Collateral" (2004). I've often regarded Vincent as John Wick's evil predecessor and can't help but ponder what would happen if the two ever met; It would be a sort of Godzilla vs. Kong scenario.

At any rate, this is the music featured during the shoot-out in the dance club. And, as an extra bonus, "Collateral" also uses a track from Vangelis OST "1492: Conquest of Paradise."

Star Wars, The Phantom Menace - Duel of the Fates
1 replies

I still get chills listening to this song.

The Internet was still maturing.
Fans were devouring every since morsel of information about the new movie.
A new Star Wars movie after 16 years of virtual silence.

I saw this movie at least 5 times in the theater. Each time, I still couldn't believe that I was blessed enough to see a really-for-real new Star Wars movie in my lifetime. It was so magical. You just wished that every day could go by that-much-sooner so you could get to Episodes 2 & 3.

What I wouldn't give to go back to that time in my life when there was still so much hope and promise in the world.

Fuck you, Disney, for going on to destroy one of the greatest IPs of all time. There is no Ring of Hell hot enough for you to burn in for what you did to Star Wars.

Oldfield, Mike - Songs of a Distant Earth
1 replies

I may be a Vangelis junkie, but I do listen to other New Age music.

Songs of a Distant Earth really does evoke this sort of bizarre, alternate Earth just out in the middle of nowhere. I used to listen to this album whenever I was balancing my checkbook and paying my bills.

I miss the Old Internet because, if I remember correctly, I got this from usenet somewhere. Later bought the CD (but couldn't play the multimedia side of it because I think it was Apple-only... There was some reason why I couldn't play it).

God, how I miss the Old Internet.

one of my favorite niche sub-genres of music has to be slavic alt rock. Although Russian creators like Katya Lel and Zemfira are awesome I am also a fan of the Belarussian band Tanin jazz and the Polish band Happysad. You should check them out!
